Grant Gregory, USF's top backup quarterback for the past two seasons, has officially started classes at Kansas State and will compete for the Wildcats' starting quarterback job this fall after being granted a waiver to allow him immediate eligibility this fall.
"He has an opportunity here," coach Bill Snyder said by phone Wednesday. "He's a very, very good quarterback, one who just played behind a truly exceptional quarterback down there the last three years."
Gregory's career numbers at USF -- 27-of-50 for 384 yards and four touchdowns -- read more like a strong Saturday in the pass-happy Big 12, but he has the experience of five college football seasons, which is much more than the two redshirt freshmen he'll be competing with. His ability to run well in additional to his passing skills makes him ideally suited for Kansas State's offense.
"I have a close relationship with Jim Leavitt, and Grant was highly recommended to me," Snyder said. "Jim was all in favor of it. Jim has been here before and knows exactly what we do (on offense). Grant is focus, committed and dedicated. He has the complete package."
Gregory, who is expected to wear No. 6 for the Wildcats, was granted a sixth year of eligibility this spring, citing injuries that kept him from playing in 2004 and most of the 2007 season. Kansas State lost junior Josh Freeman to the NFL Draft, where he was picked by the Bucs in the first round.

Times sportswriter Greg Auman, who covers USF, will post news and thoughts on the Bulletin and we invite your participation in the comments area.
What's with Kansas State getting great QB's lately. Are they becoming QB University? Josh Freeman turned out pretty good.

Guy worked his tail off. He deserves a shot. I'll be cheering for him. Nice to see some hardwork and patience pay off.

Grothe and Gregory might have been the toughest one-two QB tandem in the nation. Both of those guys get rocked and then bounce up. I think Grant's going to have a solid season up at K-State, but I don't think he'll be confused with Michael Bishop, either. I thought the hiring of Snyder was a pretty desparate move, because that team is headed back to where it was before Snyder was there. But, getting a guy like Gregory will help him create a bridge to the QB of the future.

It was funny -- one of the things Snyder said yesterday was that with a new player, you can never tell how tough they are. I just told him to ask Gregory about his nose sometime.

Grant had his nose broken almost every season he was at USF. What's the over-under on 1st break at K-State? Aside from the bad attempt at humor, I wish the kid all the luck, I always thought he threw a nice ball.

Bullfan's got it. He wouldn't be able to play this fall if there wasn't a graduate program he couldn't get at USF.

Grant seemed like a good young man and was definitely a tough guy. Best wishes for him at KS.

One reason he picked K-State because they have the classes to finish his Masters. I think it was in Sports Management. He is a bright kid.

He gets a chance to show what he has in his ability. IT is up to him not to blow this chance. I have not heard if he is going to be getting a degree or not.
