Evening edition: More USF notes and links

I usually do links in the morning, but with a bunch to share and lots to do Tuesday, I'll get them out of the way tonight.

-- First, a follow-up on USF defensive grad assistant Jared Davis taking a job as defensive coordinator at Gibbs High in St. Petersburg. Davis said he's gotten to know new Gibbs coach Donnie Abraham -- the former Bucs and Jets defensive back -- in the past few years since he's been coaching at East Lake. There's a good connection between the two, as former USF defensive backs coach Troy Douglas, who Davis worked closely with, was Abraham's coach at East Tennessee State.

Davis said he was drawn by the chance to run his own defense -- he'll use a simplified version of Wally Burnham's ("what I was born and bred on") and tweak with a little of what Joe Tresey has taught this spring. He'll also teach at Gibbs, likely working in dropout prevention, and with Abraham off campus, Davis will have more responsibilities during the school day. Was it hard to leave USF? "Very hard," he said. "I've made some tremendous friends there, lifelong friends."

-- Basketball preview? Collegehoops.net has a USF preview, though they project Eladio Espinosa in the starting lineup, so I'm not sure how seriously to take anything else they're saying. The Big East could wear USF down by the middle of January? What is that, four conference games?

-- NBA Summer League update -- former USF center Will McDonald didn't play in Milwaukee's first two games because he was awaiting clearance from FIBA. He got that late Sunday and is expected to play in Monday night's game against Sacramento.

-- Fantasy college football? Can't say I've played it, but CBSsports.com has its Big East fantasy preview, written by a good writer in Jeff Lippman. There's a writeup on USF's Matt Grothe: "He might not have the weapons that (Tony) Pike has at Cincinnati or the sheer athleticism that (Jarrett) Brown has for the Mountaineers, but Grothe is the best football player of the bunch," he writes.

-- This fantasy college football prediction story thinks former USF QB Grant Gregory will get the starting job at Kansas State.

-- You ask for soccer, I give you soccer. Remember Neven Subotic? The former USF signee, still just 20, is getting looks from Arsenal and Chelsea as he plays for Borussia Dortmund, a top team in Germany.

-- Fun hypothetical "super league" for college football from the Daily Camera in Colorado. Eight BCS leagues with eight teams each -- some current BCS teams get dropped, including the Big East's Cincinnati and Connecticut, while six teams join the BCS ranks: Utah, TCU, BYU, Boise State, East Carolina and Tulsa. USF joins three other Big East schools with four ACC teams in the "Atlantic," a little less out of its natural geography ...

-- July is a huge month for basketball recruiting evaluation, and there's a big AAU tournament coming in South Florida, according to the Miami Herald.

Brian, I think it just shows that the coaching staff is able to identify talent, even if they don't make it to campus.

I don't think Neven Subotic or USF gets to claim each other. It never happened.

But I do appreciate the dig to find something semi-related to USF soccer. Kudos, Greg.

Why would you toss the reigning Big East Champs? That does not make sense.
I also don't think ECU is all it is cracked up to be, but whatever.

You mean someone outside of the city of Orlando doesn't think that UCiF deserves to be in a BCS conference? That's just blatant disregard for all the great things that Coach O'Liar has done with that program... A winless season and a wok for an OCS... They're definitely deserving of a bid...

I played College Fantasy Football last year and won the Bullspen league. CBS has a great set up for it. Very user friendly and fun.

Grothe won't have great numbers for the first 3 weeks as 2/3 are AA teams which only give you 75% of the points scored. And he won't play more than a half

If Subotic gets picked up by one of these clubs, that would make put him as one of the highest profile players with connections to the US, let alone USF.
