Nine days before the start of fall practice, USF freshman linebacker Sam Barrington was at the Orient Road jail on Tuesday afternoon, having turned himself in on a misdemeanor charge of driving with a suspended license.
Barrington, 18, was released on $250 bond at 4:09 p.m. Wednesday, less than two hours after he was booked through the jail's self-arrest program, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office records.
Barrington's license was suspended after he failed to appear in court in Jacksonville after a citation in January. USF police issued a warrant for his arrest on June 25 for driving with a suspended license with knowledge, and he was also cited by Temple Terrace police for speeding on July 7. The January citation in Jacksonville was for not carrying a driver's license and for driving a vehicle in unsafe condition.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound freshman is one of the highest rated members of USF's incoming recruiting class, having signed with USF over an offer from the University of Miami.
Barrington and USF coach Jim Leavitt could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday. Here is the legal information from Mugshots.Tampabay.com.
-- Former USF signee Kamran Joyer, the Wesley Chapel offensive lineman who was granted a release after academic issues put his admission to USF in jeopardy, has been admitted into Louisville and will report for practice Aug. 5, according to the school's sports information department.

Times sportswriter Greg Auman, who covers USF, will post news and thoughts on the Bulletin and we invite your participation in the comments area.

Respect lost from a Turd is not any loss as far as I'm concerned. If you're only worried about this becoming a trend, then why are you still running around demanding that the sky is falling and that anyone denying that is an apologist?
The reality is that you're continuing to piss and moan about this, which is hilarious. If this is the only issue USF has this year, I'm a happy fan.

Turd, you ARE a crybaby! You want to make this kind of thing seem like it is a marshal offense, and the kid should be put to death.
I've said repeatedly that I'm not making excuses for the kid, that I don't condone his actions. I hope that Leavitt takes some step of disciplinary action.
However, I don't think this is the end of the world. The sky is NOT falling, no matter how much you want to cry that it is, Chicken Little.
Posted by: USFMikeB | July 31, 2009 at 07:07 AM
O'Neal, your point is moot.
You know what would happen if this WERE a carjacking case? We'd be hearing the same thing from you USF apologists.
"He's 18 years old...cut him some slack."
"Everybody's jacked a car at some point in their lives."
"Carjacking is what 18-year-olds do."
"At least he used his turn signals while changing lanes in the jacked car."
Now, O'Neal...before you go haywire and start screaming about how Barrington never jacked a car, etc., this is what we call a "hypothetical situation." It's an effective way to make a point during the course of a debate.
You people are great. Never a dull moment reading the comments of the USF Apologists Club.
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | July 30, 2009 at 10:24 PM
Well, well, well...would ya' lookie here, Mr. MikeB --
Look at what just popped up for tomorrow's edition of the Times. A story about a 78-year-old woman who went to jail for an old unpaid ticket.
http://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/crime/article1023466.ece
Gee...wasn't that EXACTLY the point I made only hours ago? But, but, but...I thought people did this because they are 18. But, but, but...she's 78. In her case, dementia may have been in play. Is that your next excuse for Barrington?
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | July 30, 2009 at 10:17 PM
"CONDEMN and move on"??? "Make it up to society for his stupidity"??? You do realize that it's a MISDEMEANOR traffic issue, not an armed carjacking! He turned himself in and will no doubt make restitution. I have not read one story where the kid blames anyone. "Abusing our country"???....."Humans are DOOMED"??? You need to get a grip on reality! "The sky is FALLING!...the sky is FALLING!"
Posted by: Steve O'Neal | July 30, 2009 at 09:22 PM
STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOLKS. Condemn and move on. He needs to make it up to society for his stupidity. The rest of us have to pay for it. I am SOOOO sick of working for a living and people abusing our country.
Posted by: Reality | July 30, 2009 at 08:49 PM
Brilliant, MikeB...just brilliant.
You just pulled the same crap every person in the history of the world who knows they have NO ARGUMENT pulls.
i.e. calling someone a crybaby.
Your comments (once again) have no merit. You say, "reality is that 18 year old kids get into this stuff." Age has nothing to do with it, my uninformed friend. 30 year olds get into this stuff, as do 40, 50, and 60 year olds. Do you know what the COMMON DENOMINATOR is? Irresponsibility, and disrespect for the law. Age has absolutely NOTHING to do with it.
When Barrington received his license at 16, did he not have to pass a test? Does he not understand that if you break the law, you get a ticket? And that when you get a ticket, you have to pay it? And if you do not pay it, you have to go to court? And if your LICENSE TO DRIVE is taken away, you CANNOT DRIVE?
What does being 18, 28, 38, 48...have to do with it? NOTHING.
And lest you think I want him kicked off the team...no, no, no. I've never argued for that. But if a pattern begins to develop, that's another story.
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | July 30, 2009 at 05:29 PM
Hey Turd, I could care less what you think. If you want to keep on thinking the world is going to end and keep your panties in a wad over this, feel free.
Me, I prefer reality. Reality is that 18 year old kids get into stupid stuff like this.
Does that mean that I condone it or make excuses for it? No. It just means that I know it is going to happen and I'm not going to cry about something as minor as this like you are.
Your little crying fit really is HILARIOUS!
Posted by: USFMikeB | July 30, 2009 at 05:01 PM
Hey, MikeB...
You know the only reason some of us are making a big deal of this? It's because of folks like you trying to make a SMALL deal of this.
"Everybody does it." -- Not true
"He's a kid." -- He's legally an adult
"It was a mistake." -- Oops! I ACCIDENTALLY started the car, put it in drive, and hit the gas pedal. How did that happen?
"It's not a big deal." -- Go tell that to the officers and judges...I would love to see their reaction.
So here's the moral of the story, Mike: If you don't want to hear any more of our "making a big deal of it," stop making lame, unsustainable excuses, and stop saying it's not a big deal.
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | July 30, 2009 at 02:50 PM
Hey Ding Dong- I making no excuses for anyone... What I am saying is that it is easy to get a speeding ticket... I also said that he made a poor decision. What I still do not understand is that it appeared that he did not get the support from his family or friends when he needed it.
And although you may have never gotten one in TT, I am sure you have gotten one before sometime in you life...so do not give me your “I am better than you stuff”.
Maybe you are just a better liar and better at getting away with things!
Anyway... you are just as annoying when you were Chalko...

Posted by: USFMikeB | July 30, 2009 at 02:39 PM
Bad start for Barrington. Not the biggest deal in the world, but obviously, any slip by a freshman doesn't look good to the outside world.
Nice words, Reality. Barrington (and other speeders) should accept that they broke a law. Not the most serious law, but nonetheless, instead of blaming the cops for doing their jobs, just learn to be a bit more cautious on the road.

Failure to pay a fine...Stupid!
Failure to appear in court...Really stupid!
Knowingly driving with a suspended license...Really, really stupid.
Speeding while driving with a suspended license...Terminally stupid.
Adults making excuses for this type of behavior...The root of the problem.

Let's face facts. The problem is lack of personal responsibility, and it runs rampant through this society. It is always the blame game, and until we all step up and accept that we need to do better as humans, then we are all doomed.
Posted by: Reality | July 30, 2009 at 01:34 PM
There's no need for a poll. Half the readers here are nowhere near Temple Terrace.
The problem isn't speeding -- I think everyone reading this does that regularly, whether they're caught or not. The problem is driving with a suspended license and getting caught.

You've been making excuses for Barrington's blunders and now your making them for yourself.
POLL:
1. Have you gotten a speeding ticket in Temple Terrace?
2. Have you been caught speeding in Temple Terrace while driving with a suspended driver's license?
Me:
1 NO!
2.NO!

A gator fan calling a kid that gets a traffic citation a thug! HAHAHAHA! The gators are more like a street gang than a FB team. Even with Timmy "JESUS" Tebow preachig to his team mates, they still probably lead the D-1 FB programs in # of players arrested and charged with CRIMES, not traffic citations!
Posted by: Steve O'Neal | July 29, 2009 at 06:20 PM
I honestly do not think this kid is a bad kid... I myself got a speeding ticket in Temple Terrace, seriously who hasn't... The are literally the speed Nazi's in that city.
As for his citation in January, he probably could not afford to pay it and instead of showing up to court to take care of it, he blew it off. Do we really know if he actually received the summons that he must appear in court?
It is poor judgement, but he is not some guy cheating on his USF exam or getting into a fight at a bar or a DUI...
What is sad is where is his family? Why didn't they help him?
Anyway, I am sure he will show up to court now and hopefully he will get some help from his new team mates and coaches...

"Did you even read the article?

4. July 7: He was cited by Temple Terrace police for speeding.
Sounds like a guy who doesn't think the laws of the State of Florida apply to him. But what the hey, he's an athlete, he's special!"
Yep, I did, and thats the exact summary I gave: he got a ticket and forgot to pay it or couldn't pay it and elected a court date that he missed. If you don't pay it, your license is suspended. That's not a big deal because as soon as you do pay it the suspension goes away.
As for getting a speeding ticket, that's unrelated and not very significant. If you think receiving a speeding ticket is a major crime then I suggest you watch more Law and Order.
Posted by: Windbane | July 29, 2009 at 03:06 PM
Mr. Turd, I did not know you know he does not care. He may not. It may have just slipped his mind. Don't know but give the young man a chance to do right. Also give him a wake up call. The Bobby Knight thing was not feeble unless you are not informed. BK got in trouble for slapping a player and grabbing him. So a good slap on the back of the head to wake him up and not to do something worst to screw up his life.

Bill...
Was that an attempt at an analogy, because it really makes no sense. One person's violations that have not been ticketed have no bearing whatsoever on a guy who KNEW he had unpaid tickets and apparently just didn't care.
But keep trying, USF apologists. You're not really getting any closer to justifying this, but it sure is fun reading your feeble attempts.
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | July 29, 2009 at 11:46 AM
Ok, for all those who say I don't know of anyone that got arrested for that. Should also go down to the Clerk's office and pay the appropriate fine for ALL of your personal violations that you were not caught for. If he was not a USF player we would not KNOW of the arrest. CJF should do a Bobby Knight on him and be done with it. Or let his parents take care of it. You aint too old or too big for Moma.

Hernando, newspapers across the country report arrests before they are convictions. The story doesn't say he committed a crime; it says he turned himself into police on a charge of committing a crime. If he's later cleared, there will be another story that conveys that.
Story didn't even have a headline in the newspaper. As arrest stories go, it's not a significant one.
Posted by: G.A. | July 29, 2009 at 11:35 AM
Actually, Happiness Consultant is absolutely correct, it just may not apply to this situation.
I moved from New Orleasn to Washington DC a couple months back, and didn't move my drivers license until recently. Because we titled our vehicles in Virginia and moved our insurance, we had to cancel our insurance in Louisiana. Because I did that, Louisiana sent me a letter giving me 30 days to correct before they would suspend my license.
Also, when I still lived in Florida, I had my license suspended for failing to pay a parking ticket that I never received, and the state didn't notify my that it had been suspended. Ifound out one day when I was pulled over. Those things do still happen.
Not saying that these have anything to do with Barrington's situation, just pointing out that Turd's claim that those things don't happen is absolutely false.
BTW, Happiness Consultant gets a shout out for the reference to the HBO show "Hung", which is HILARIOUS!

But that's a fail.
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | July 29, 2009 at 11:26 AM
The information at Mugshots.TampaBay.com can't be relied on as gospel. The charges are for alleged offenses. Reading "Mugshots' is like reading the comics in the newspaper--it is for entertainment. To obtain the final disposition of any criminal charges, contact the local Clerk of the Circuit Court. What is interesting is that even when one sees a final disposition, it could be a "legal fiction" for an "act" the person didn't even really do, but is used for sentencing per an agreement in the court. In other words, don't believe everything you see in the newspaper.
Posted by: Hernando | July 29, 2009 at 11:17 AM
If you've changed your car insurance in the last few years, then you're probably driving with a suspended license. Not because you did anything wrong, but because when you cancel your car insurance, the carrier is required by law to notify the DMV; however, your new carrier has no such obligation and thus the DMV only receives notice that you cancelled and not that you renewed with someone else.
I only make this reference to illustrate how easily one's license can be suspended in this State, many of whom are driving around and don't even know it.

Almost all of USF's points in the Fulmer Cup are from Trent Pupello, and prosecutors haven't decided what charges to pursue in that case, so I don't know that's exactly locked up ...

Posted by: Brian | July 29, 2009 at 09:59 AM
Steve, we've run mugs on this blog before, so there was certainly a conscious decision not to run a mug here, and to run a link to a place where you can find more information about the arrest. I'm guessing only a small percentage of readers click through on that. The fact that he hasn't played a game and is about as young as a college football player is these days are factors in that decision.
Posted by: G.A. | July 29, 2009 at 09:59 AM
If unpaid USF parking tickets can make one wind up in the slammer, I should probably be in Leavenworth by now.
I'm a little disappointed at the link to the mugshot, though. I understand you have to get the scoop and all. But it's in poor taste to put a kid's pic like that in a blog, IMO.
On the bright side, we're getting mugshots linked in blogs like the Big 3!
Posted by: Steve Stacy | July 29, 2009 at 09:36 AM
Guys, guys. It's chaos on here.
The kid isn't very good about following basic driving laws. Just sounds like he's piled up more tickets than he's in a position to pay for.
I don't know of a less significant misdemeanor than driving with a suspended license -- I think failure to appear in court is probably a larger disrespect than letting a license get suspended. Most of us, in the same position, would be able to pay the necessary fines to continue driving without a problem.
There are multiple bad decisions involved in all of this, yes. I don't know that any of them are hugely damning.

Thanks for the tip, Greg. Safari keeps the "name" field filled in automatically, so typing the letters of of order one time causes it to be wrong until I (or a certain blogger) catches it.
Nice catch.
Hey, O'Neal...calm down. If you were so slick, why didn't you catch my blunder? Shouldn't you be emailing Brian Bennett demanding that he pick the Bulls to win the Big East? Here's the way your emails read:
"Dear Brian,
Why didn't you pick USF to win the Big East this season? Don't you know our Head Coach is the best football coach ever? And that our QB can shoot deer? And that our offensive line are big strong guys? And that our wide receivers have fingers? And that our defensive linemen are big and fat? And that our safeties are safe? And that our kicker, Delbert Alvarado, has never missed a kick in his whole career?
Don't you know we've won the Big East every year, and that we're the defending national champions? How can you not pick us to win the conference this year? Are you delusional, or something?
Respectfully yours,
