G.A. news: USF loses one, produces one

By G.A. news, of course, I mean graduate assistant news, with a small opening on USF's coaching staff and another former Bulls player joining the college coaching ranks.

First, Jared Davis, who has been part of the staff at USF since the Bulls joined the Big East, including the past two seasons as defensive graduate assistant, is leaving to become defensive coordinator at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg.

Davis will work under newly hired coach Donnie Abraham, the former Bucs and Jets safety who was hired three weeks ago. He had coached at Countryside as an assistant for three seasons before coming to USF in 2005.

Having Davis at Gibbs could help USF with defensive end Tim Jackson, the talented recruit who we told you about after USF's SuperBull camp last month.

-- More G.A. news: Former Bulls receiver Marcus Edwards has accepted a position as a graduate assistant at Wagner College, a Division I-AA program in Staten Island, N.Y., where he'll directly oversee the Seahawks' wide receivers.

"We're really excited about him -- he has a real drive and love for the game," said Wagner coach Walt Hameline. "I wish he could still play for us, because I know he was a real outstanding player, a captain with real great leadership skills."

Edwards, the only USF football player named as a four-time member of the Big East all-academic team, finished his Bulls career with 31 starts, with 73 catches for 928 yards and three touchdowns. He had worked with USF's receivers and punt returners as a volunteer in spring practice.

Edwards is the second recent Bulls graduate to jump right into the college coaching ranks -- safety Danny Verpaele is working in the same capacity at Virginia Military Institute, where he works with the defensive secondary.

There's a connection between USF and Wagner, as Larry Antonucci, the Bulls' assistant athletic director for football operations, played football at Hameline and spent his first season after graduation as a graduate assistant there in 1993.

Lots more to come in the morning on USF's Sling & Shoot camp, which brought 62 high school teams for two days of competition -- Hillsborough High beat Charlotte 20-6 in the final, with Jefferson and Armwood rounding out the final four ...

I'd think that having former players get into the coaching ranks is good for us, too.
