USF forward Gus Gilchrist, sidelined since December with a severely sprained ankle, will travel with the Bulls this weekend and could make his return in Sunday's game at Notre Dame.
"He looked pretty good. He did all right," coach Stan Heath said of Friday's practice, noting that Gilchrist was able to participate in some full-contact parts of team drills.
Heath said Saturday will be a key day to evaluate Gilchrist's soreness and swelling, but he expects the sophomore to be available to play against Notre Dame, and close to full strength by next week's Feb. 13 game at Marquette.
Gilchrist was USF's leading scorer when he was injured in December, though the Bulls have played well without him, going 5-5 in Big East play. USF has won four games in a row, including upset wins against No. 17 Pittsburgh and Wednesday's 72-64 win at No. 7 Georgetown.

Times sportswriter Greg Auman, who covers USF, will post news and thoughts on the Bulletin and we invite your participation in the comments area.

One game at a time, please. Let's enjoy these moments and not get ahead of ourselves. Though going to the White House and meeting the president after the season would be great.

Have you all forgotten there is also a BE Tourney, which comes before the NCAA one? Turd is right, some of you are jumping waaayyy too far ahead. USF would have to win at least 1 or 2 games in the BE tourney along with closing the season out strong to get the NCAA bid.

We had to win 1 road game out of the 3 and we have done that. Play with house money these next 2 and see what happens. All this team has to do is win out at home and beat DePaul on the road and it's a NCAAT appearance for the most unlikely of BE opponents.

Great to see all the positive news about USF hoops and positive comments on performance.
Hope we don't drop two straight and these same folks go back to calling for CSH's head.
Go Bulls!

Got it figured out--I missed the "EST" in the schedule (12 noon, est). And the SPTimes this morning says it is going to be on Ch. 28, so we Verizon customers will be able to watch this one!

Do any of you know what time the game is tomorrow--the schedule says noon, but is that noon here or there?

Agreed! Not about the rankings it's about getting in NCAA tourney! But we win next 2 we will be ranked and deserve to be ranked. 6 wins in a row in big east you are a top 25 team at 17-7 & 7-5 in conference. A long way to go for this team but potential with this confidence they have is strong.

We had one fellow here a few days ago demanding a top-ten ranking in the next poll.
I've always known we have a LOT of delusional football fans, but apparently any success the basketball program has is going to breed its own crop of delusion.

I'm not too concerned with rankings. Just enjoying watching this team play basketball. We are making great strides and that's all we can ask right now.
Hoping DoJo comes back and we can do some real damage next year.

We've had a good little run here, but I think we'd be going a little astray to confuse ourselves with one of the top 25 teams in the country. Let's see if Gilchrist can come back, how much he can play, what kind of shape he's in, and how he can fit back into the team that's developed in his absence, which is quite different than the one we had before he left. If that all goes well, maybe we can improve on winning half the BE games in the second half of the season--then, we would fit in that company, but there's a big maybe in there.

Jupiter
We don't need to win next 4! We beat ND we will get votes and we beat marquette next week we are ranked! 17 wins & 7 wins in conf we get ranked.
Posted by: USFShep | February 06, 2010 at 07:21 AM
Polls come out Monday. If we beat ND, on the road, we'll be 16-7, and with the high profile win v GTown & Pitt, we'll get some votes.
I don't know if we can get ranked unless we win 4 more in a row. Of course, the 5th game is Villanova. If we beat them (not likely at all), we'd be in for sure. 7 losses is tough...but I'm thrilled to be 15-7.

Who thought that we would be 500 in conference games when Gilchrist came back?
I hope he eases in and the team can get better with him on the court.
GO BULL!

Here's hoping he's ready to come back.
Posted by: Ken | February 05, 2010 at 08:01 PM
Probably take him a little time to get back in game shape. Glad he's comong back for the stretch run. GO BULLS!
