Marvin Kloss, a kicker from Naples Barron Collier who made an official visit to USF two weeks ago but did not get a scholarship offer, is considering walking on with the Bulls, his high school coach said.
"He has the idea that he's going to kick in state of Florida for a BCS school," said Barron Collier coach Mark Ivey, who talked with USF coach Skip Holtz on Friday. "He's an unbelieveable kicker, and wherever he goes, within a year or two, he's going to be a starter. He likes South Florida very, very much."
Kloss, rated as the nation's No. 1 kicker by the Kornblue Kicking School, is also talking with Florida about walking on with the Gators and may visit the Gainesville campus next weekend, Ivey said. Kloss' grades are strong enough that he'll qualify for the Bright Futures Scholarship at either school.
USF will have three kicking specialists on scholarship this fall -- sophomore Maikon Bonani, the team's primary kicker in 2008, and sophomore Justin Brockhaus-Kann and true freshman Chris Veron, who will compete for the punting job. The Bulls also have senior walk-on Eric Schwartz, who excelled in stepping in for the injured Bonani this past season. Kloss' leg is strong enough that he could compete for kickoff duties, even as a freshman walk-on.
You can see highlights of Kloss here on Youtube.com.
-- USF freshmen Lindsey Lamar and Derrick Hopkins will compete in the indoor 60-meter dash tonight at Penn State -- you can check here for live stats, with prelims starting at 5 p.m. Lamar is in position to post an NCAA qualifying mark, having already registered the fastest time in the Big East this season.
-- Here's a name from the past -- Chris DeArmas, who signed with USF in 2005 but quit the team after just four practices, has resurfaced five years later, signing with Arizona State. DeArmas most recently played at El Camino College in California.

Times sportswriter Greg Auman, who covers USF, will post news and thoughts on the Bulletin and we invite your participation in the comments area.
Greg,
Did Kloss come to a decision yet? Is he still considering USF?

I've just obtained exclusive surveillance video from the day O'Neal went to Burger King to fight that guy. After the other guy didn't show up, O'Neal went in for a Whopper. He's the guy in the red bandana...

I knew that would get a rise out of you O'Neal. Had that blood pressure checked this morning???
Who is Jim Leavitt?
Didn't he play Eddie Haskel on Leave it to Beaver?
Posted by: jt | February 08, 2010 at 10:17 AM
Good effort, O'Neal.
Do you think Skip would be interested in meeting you in a Burger King parking lot?
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | February 08, 2010 at 10:15 AM
That's what Holtz said when I asked him about Turd. He went on to say "why would anyone want to meet a Turd?"
Posted by: Steve O'neal | February 08, 2010 at 09:41 AM
Never heard of the guy.
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | February 08, 2010 at 09:26 AM
Very well stated, Bill B. Leavitt definitely needs to learn from this incident if he wants to be a HC at another major FB program. Certainly glad the BB team is doing well. Gives USF fans something to do while waiting on FB season to start. I'm excited about the next step for the Bulls FB program.

Who is Jim Leavitt?
Posted by: Coach Turd Ferguson | February 07, 2010 at 09:51 PM
He is the guy that gave rise to your infamy and to the football program. USF could have gotten a famous college coach like the Florida team down south did. How's it working for them? OK we know he did not seem to have what it takes to get us to the next level. We are at a level no one would have believed we could get to in such short time. Also we could have gotten a coach that had some success like UCF. How is that working for them?
So we give the man credit where credit is due. And if we are going to harp on the one incident that is talked about we need to jog our resources and find out about Lou Holtz's coaching. Yes, he did take ND to the big time, but I believe he was not the lovable guy we see on TV now. I guess if you win you are given a pass.
So, JL did a great job for his first Head Coaching job. He will come back if he learns to make adjustments.
Posted by: Bill B. | February 08, 2010 at 08:51 AM
The F'N internet idiots can't help but bang on CJL. Is it the success a person you idiots can't stand that bothers y'all? Just like one of the POS lackeys only pointing out a couple of bad memories. ALL teams have had bad calls and bad plays. For all the bad memories you can come up with there are 10 good things CJL did to offset them. Cry and act like the stupid azzez you are, it's expected. GO BULLS!

===================
He's the guy that was in charge of the infamous Voodoo 5 play @ UCONN back in '05. The bungled call on 4th and goal cost USF a chance to play for a BCS bid @ home the next week against WVU.
So who is Jim Leavitt? Well, a genius of course!
Thanks former coach Leavitt for all the memories! That one I'll never forget.
Posted by: jt | February 07, 2010 at 11:24 PM
Landi is the most viable of the three, but he also has a real value at another position, moreso than the other two. Virgin has a superstrong arm -- I think the claim was that he can throw 55 yards from his knees. His size is much like Gunsby, though he could also make an impact at tight end.
Marc has gotten looks all over the field -- first at safety, then QB, then receiver. I think it makes more sense to keep him at receiver and try to find a role for him there.

Who is Jim Leavitt?
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | February 07, 2010 at 09:51 PM
Just had an opportunity to watch the youtube video about Kloss. All I can say is he kicked a freaking touchback from his own 20, he put another through the uprights and he nailed a 48 yard field goal in a game. SIGN HIM UP WITH A SCOLLY!
Posted by: politically incorrect | February 07, 2010 at 08:28 PM
Thanks Greg. With Daniels being limited during spring practice, and probably not a big factor for their spring game, it'll be interesting to see how Holtz uses Evan Landi, Victor Marc and Isaac Virgin? We've seen Landi play some at QB, but what's the skinny (advantages/disadvantages) on both Marc and Virgin as QBs?
Posted by: Don G | February 07, 2010 at 12:43 PM
There are other QB options as Greg has pointed out. Leavitt was also recruiting other QBs in this last class. Holtz has inherited a good group of players recruited by Leavitt and his staff. Holtz acknowledged that CJL had built quite a program. Leavitt will not be the one to take the Bulls to the next level. But no one with an ounce of intelligence can dispute the AMAZING job he did to build a D1A BCS program faster than has ever been done before! I would like to thank Jim and wish him good luck in the future. I'm pretty sure that Holtz will do a fine job and continue to build the Bulls into a national power in FB! GO BULLS!
Posted by: Steve O'neal | February 07, 2010 at 12:04 PM
The depth issue at QB could be resolved with any number of position changes -- Evan Landi, Victor Marc and Isaac Virgin were all high school quarterbacks who were at one point in the past year getting snaps at USF as a quarterback. I would be surprised if at least one of them doesn't get work back at QB.
Posted by: G.A. | February 07, 2010 at 11:35 AM
el toro, that ESPN story brings up this point: how was it that Leavitt allowed (or it just happened?) USF's depth at QB to end up where it is - in bad shape? Even without Grothe's injury, he was a senior and would graduate. Was USF going to depend on Landi to be their backup or just hope that Daniels never got hurt? This QB situation is not something a solid BCS team / program should find themselves in. Possibly another testiment to Leavitt's poor management/recruiting priorities?
Posted by: Don G | February 07, 2010 at 11:01 AM
I still don't understand how such a promising looking kicker who many people consider as one of the best in the state doesn't get a scholarship offer from a major school. Hope he comes here.
Here's a good piece on Holtz and the QB situation:

Are we diagnosing O'Neal, now? Maybe demonic possession? No, I don't even think an exorcism would work on that guy. But I think a frontal lobotomy would do the trick.
Posted by: SP.BULL | February 06, 2010 at 07:56 PM
O'Neal, maybe you just need to cut out the libations. Admitting it is half the battle.
Posted by: Ric | February 06, 2010 at 07:46 PM
O'Neal, you should really look into some anger management rehabilitation. They make some amazing medications nowadays that can help you with your problem. Best of luck to you!
Posted by: jt | February 06, 2010 at 07:20 PM
Again with the profanity, O'Neal.
You have a foul mouth. I would hate to hear the way you speak in-person.
But what should I expect from a guy who shows up at a Panda Express hoping to fight some stranger?
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | February 06, 2010 at 07:08 PM
I never post as someone I'm not. no need to post as some stupid F'N name like Turd! No, I'll use my real name and if someone doesn't like what I say, oh well. But I will never post as anyone but Steve O'Neal. So to answer your question....NO It's not possible that Steve O'Neal is the same as any other poster than Steve O'Neal!

Skip needs to hold off on any scholarship offers on Kloss. The kid has the Bright Futures one right now. If he makes the team and shows some good promise during the season, then he can make a decision on the scholarship or he may be able to transfer to another BCS school. Especially if Verone and Bonani work out good this year. Kloss is the "one in the hip pocket" type for this year.

Kyle Bronson. I had to look it up to remember for sure. The transfer didn't work out well for him in terms of playing time, if I recall.

Re: kickers, I hope that Holtz has a different view of kickers than Leavitt? Ol' Jimbo didn't really seem to understand the importance of good kicking - that is, until it wasn't working and causing losses.

Ditto that!
Remember a few years back we had that walk-on kid come in and kick really well after scholorship kicker Mike Benzer couldn't make an extra point. Then our former coach wouldn't give him a scholorship so he transfered to North Texas, or someplace like that. That is when Delby arrived on the scene and our special teams blunders began. Delby wasn't even a good punter. He usually had one blocked each year that led to a TD for the other team.
We had a good run with Bill and Santiago. Santiago made so many clutch FG's that one year we won all those overtime games.
I hope Coach Holtz gets this kid on campus and opens up the kicking competiton.
Posted by: jt | February 06, 2010 at 12:24 PM
Nancy, he has numerous I-AA offers and his coach said he has two out-of-state I-A offers (didn't specify). He said Kloss wants to play in state for a BCS team, which points him toward walking on, at least initially.

Please enlighten, why wouldn't this kid get a scholarship somewhere?

I know in my advancing years that I don't follow things as well as I once did, but boy, some people can really miss some fairly easily recognizable play on words. Is it possible that O'Neal and SP Bull are the same person? Turd, could someone possibly suffer from PTSD after the firing of their favorite coach???

Yeah, Don, as I said before...I thought my "Brokeback" reference was a plainly obvious alliteration and play on words. Instead, we've got a couple guys who are crusading for gay rights lambasting me for something that was never intended. It's a simple lack of intellect.
Like you said...always an adventure here.

I don't know about high school, but we kick off from the 30, not the 35--so if their videos are showing kicks from the 40, out of and even into the endzone need to be adjusted significantly.

Bonani's been to brokeback mountain? It doesn't matter, as long as he kicks well. Shame on the rest of you.

WOW! I live a few miles from Jupiter High's Cody Parkey, rated by Rivals & Scouts as one of the Nation's Top 3 kickers. I've seen Parkey play, and now he's at Auburn.
From what I've seen in this video (and I know it's his best work...but it's 5 minutes of several kicks), Kloss is better! He attacks FGs with quick, strong strokes. He has a very quick trigger punting, and catches the ball like a pro. HUGE leg. And if he can kick the ball into the end zone on kick offs, that's worth 3-6 points a game. REALLY! If you watch closely, a few of those kick off bounced off the goal posts.
I had to ask myself if the videos were doctored. If he's this good, and he's a great student, SIGN HIM UP!!

And good night Never Land.
Posted by: Bill B. | February 05, 2010 at 08:26 PM
Now back to football. I watched some of Verone's kickoffs and he nailed them in the back of the end-zone and a little further. Given the high school kickoffs are on the 40 and college is the 35 he should still get them in the end zone. So we could have a real competition this year. AND NOT have to look at the soccer team.
Posted by: Bill B. | February 05, 2010 at 08:25 PM
Let's get this guy in and assign him to kickoffs. That's been a serious weak spot.
Posted by: Ken | February 05, 2010 at 08:05 PM
O'Neal has officially lost it, folks.
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | February 05, 2010 at 08:02 PM
Steve O, I'm not defending anyone, but Turd is clearly Pro-Bonani, and I'm 100% sure he wasn't insulting Maikon. The Brokeback comment reference clearly was a light-hearted reference to Bonani's injury (which would NOT be mildly amusing if he wasn't healed).
There are other things to get upset @. The Leavitt/Running Back & Delby going to the Bucs jokes don't bother me...I just think those jabs are lame/played out. That said, I agree Delby wasn't a good kicker, but the guy tried, so I'm not into bashing him...he kicks better than I do.
More importantly, our track stars qualified at PSU. Not sure how they did in the finals...check it out.

Hope those guys can translate this speed to the field.
Posted by: Jupiter Bull | February 05, 2010 at 07:59 PM
I don't enjoy very much that T posts, but Brokeback Bonani was very funny.
That movie should have won the Oscar that year instead of Crash, which was a movie with terribly unrealistic dialogue about racism, but I digress...
Posted by: Allen | February 05, 2010 at 07:42 PM
Lost what? Get a grip? Give me a break! Y'all can defend a POS all you want, He's a jerk and that's all there is to it. Why would I be upsert, I just call 'em as I see 'em. Well have fun in internet land, I'm going out.
Posted by: Steve O'neal | February 05, 2010 at 07:39 PM
O'Neal, time to get a grip. Turd, in your opinion, made a foo-paw. Oops, He may have not ever seen the movie or even thought about the movie. It reminds me of when a president went down under and flashed the peace sign. It has a different meaning down there.

StevO,
Have you lost it? Calm down my man.
Posted by: DELdaBull | February 05, 2010 at 07:19 PM
Calm down O'Neal. Bonani did injure his back in the fall. I figure Turd was using a little aliteration to lighten up a rainy Friday night.

Exactly right, JT.
But I now realize how foolish it was of me to think O'Neal understood the concept of alliteration.
He never graduated from our illustrious university, if memory serves me correctly.
